Dining with the King
Imagine my surprise when I saw that the title of the sermon this week was “Dining with the King." The reason that I was struck by this is because my friend and hero, Dr. Charles McGowan, is preaching for us this week. I don't think that Martha had told him that we had just concluded a series on Eating and Drinking with Jesus, so I was surprised to see that, in God’s providence, he had chosen a text and title that had to do with eating. I told Dr. McGowan that this would be great conclusion to our series on eating and he cautioned me that it might not be about food, per se, but more about how Jesus brings about his kingdom. It was after this that he sent me a quote for the bulletin, and when I read this quote, I knew this was going to be good.
“When God wants to take charge of the world, he doesn't send in tanks. He sends in the poor and the meek." -- N.T. Wright
If you have not been here when Dr. McGowan has preached, then you are in for a real treat. I know of no one that I would rather have preach the Gospel at St. Patrick than Dr. McGowan. Though he says he is retired from pastoral ministry, he is still very involved in spreading the Kingdom through a company that helps churches search for pastors and also by serving on many boards of Christian organizations that are doing tremendous Gospel ministry all over the world. And for those who do not know, Dr. McGowan is Martha Murphy's father. And, being a grandfather myself, it is not beneath me to use that ploy to get him to come and share the Gospel with us!Blessing,Jim
